He passed away in December 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the organizations Rich helped to shape\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/graperesearch.org\/staging\/\">National Grape Research Alliance<\/a> (NGRA), <a href=\"http:\/\/wineamerica.org\/\">WineAmerica<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winegrapegrowersofamerica.org\/\">Winegrape Growers of America<\/a> (WGA)\u2014collaborated to create the Rich Smith Distinguished Service Award to honor his spirit and legacy. It recognizes people who demonstrate similar qualities and make a similarly positive impact on the industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><br \/>\nTo be eligible, nominees must satisfy the following criteria:<br \/>\n&#8211; Geography: This award may be presented to any person (including foreign nationals) living and working in the U.S. whose contributions have benefited the American grape and grape products industries.<br \/>\n&#8211; Membership Status: The recipient may be, but need not be, a current or former member of any of the three sponsoring organizations: WineAmerica, WGA or NGRA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Criteria<\/strong><br \/>\nNominees for the Rich Smith Distinguished Service Award must exemplify leadership qualities on par with those that set Rich apart, such as:<br \/>\n&#8211; Fostering an atmosphere of collaboration<br \/>\n&#8211; Nurturing a community of grape and wine industry\u00a0experts<br \/>\n&#8211; Addressing widespread issues or problems<br \/>\n&#8211; Working in harmony, addressing issues\u00a0that\u00a0unite us<br \/>\n&#8211; Working as a change agent: creating systematic, positive change through research, public policy, consumer awareness and\/or volunteerism<br \/>\n&#8211; Displaying leadership in the grape and\u00a0wine\u00a0industry<br \/>\n&#8211; Demonstrating support for diversity and community<\/p>\n<p><strong>Process<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/r\/ZW9VX3Y\">Click here to submit a nomination online<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/graperesearch.org\/staging\/contact\">email a letter of nomination<\/a> addressing the criteria and eligibility above. Nominations must include a summary of the nominee&#8217;s background and information about his or her business related to the U.S. grape and wine industry, involvement in various organizations or causes, and accomplishments that have benefited the industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Nominations are due by October 30, 2020<\/u><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> The recipient will be named in January 2021.
