{"id":2697,"date":"2021-03-31T03:19:23","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T03:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/graperesearch.org\/staging\/?p=2697"},"modified":"2021-08-25T16:02:09","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T16:02:09","slug":"one-year-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graperesearch.org\/staging\/2021\/03\/31\/one-year-on\/","title":{"rendered":"One Year On&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>March 2021<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As I sat down to write this March 2021 column, out of interest, I looked back at what I wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/conta.cc\/2vYGqOE\"><strong>March 202<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/conta.cc\/2vYGqOE\"><strong>0<\/strong><\/a>, when the global pandemic was declared. With the plucky title, \u201cBetter Luck Next Time,\u201d I concluded my remarks with, \u201cAll I can hope is, when I write this column a month from now, the world will have changed again&#8211;this time for the better.\u201d One YEAR later, that short runway for normalcy seems laughable.<\/p>\n<p>As we pass the anniversary of the pandemic, there are signs of hope. As vaccinations become more widespread, work-wise, we allow ourselves to dream of in-person meetings, lunches and dinners with colleagues, conferences and trade shows, and tastings. But alas, we\u2019re not quite there. Although June once seemed like a reasonable timeframe to host a gathering, we find we must pivot to virtual with our <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001Xf9oYFuvOEO6jLWO5IX6rWv1TWPniV2n2o0MlHU83cs0ODI7ENN0jEB0BngIQTxBG9wpKqesZIkt89jQ9Bm4jgcc9ZNMc0SAMwVwafUH75BloeDKlp62nztQcCEvO-jVn-zGUZL6_DCk_sjT6kxD5WqQmWKXyg-lzW6-62IjLcw4yaLHvGXnb0WROJBUhiylEi1p2Yb4Om9ui_WagjODshV4dBVIAdOH2OhaSH2HU4U=&amp;c=EJK9gT9F_JCpHunsTlxa0-agptfDEc4H4rZvPnm-vt13wvTUaWN3LQ==&amp;ch=ITe8EhPP-4ILHylsoNtMWBU-2heDoMG9QGxnFxw67-yo6rwrYA2nDw==\"><strong>ASEV-NGRA Precision Viticulture Symposium<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019ll still be great! It\u2019ll just be online.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve learned that much of what we traveled to attend could be accomplished by phone or Zoom. Even proceedings as weighty and important as the relevance reviews for the Specialty Crop Research Initiative, which I had the honor of leading this month, proceeded digitally. We\u2019ve achieved a lot in our safe, separate spaces. But there\u2019s a certain magic in <em>meeting.<\/em> I look forward to getting some of that magic back, and rebuilding those personal, in-person connections that made our industry seem both small and large in just the right ways.<\/p>\n<p>One year on, the world certainly has changed. Has it changed for the better? In some ways, maybe. Better luck next <em>year<\/em>?
