{"id":5060,"date":"2024-09-28T03:39:54","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T03:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/graperesearch.org\/staging\/?p=5060"},"modified":"2024-09-28T17:10:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-28T17:10:28","slug":"wild-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graperesearch.org\/staging\/2024\/09\/28\/wild-things\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last couple of months, a number of articles cropped up related to climate change and what it means for us as farmers and eaters. It\u2019s as if, as more extreme and erratic weather swirls around us, the conversation is intensifying about how we might have to change, too.<\/p>\n<p>In July, climate observer David Wallace-Wells opens an essay in The New York Times titled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/28\/opinion\/food-climate-crisis-prices.html\">\u201c<strong>Food as You Know It Is About to Change<\/strong>,\u201d<\/a> talking about disruption in the global food supply, citing rising food prices and hunger, and declining yields around the world. \u201cBut disruption is only half the story,\u201d he says. \u201cAdaptation and innovation will transform the global food supply, too\u2026 Climate-endangered foodstuffs will be replaced or redesigned. Diets will shift, and with them the farmland currently producing (them). The pressure on the present food system is not a sign that it will necessarily fail, only that it must change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Replaced or redesigned food? What does that mean? In many cases (and certainly in the case of grapes), it means a return to or reliance on lesser-known or indigenous varieties. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/25\/opinion\/millet-teff-fonio-quinoa.html\"><strong>Chef Marcus Samuelsson wrote<\/strong><\/a> just a few days ago about cooking with the little-known grains of Africa. \u201cAs climate change threatens the availability of global staples like wheat, rice and potatoes, we must diversify what\u2019s on the plate,\u201d he says. \u201cChefs have a role to play in putting these climate-friendly foods on the map. Demystifying a lesser-known ingredient is something we do all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same could be said of winemakers. Indeed, of the 10,000 or so varieties of grapes in the world, only a handful\u2014Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,\u00a0Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and a few others\u2014make up the lion\u2019s share of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oiv.int\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/OIV_STATE_OF_THE_WORLD_VINE_AND_WINE_SECTOR_IN_2023_0.pdf\"><strong>global wine production.<\/strong><\/a> In projects like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dearnativegrapes.com\/\"><strong>dear native grapes,<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudsonvalleyheritagewines.com\/\"><strong>Hudon Valley Heritage,<\/strong><\/a> both in New York, heirloom or native grapes like Concord (typically used for juice and jelly), Delaware (a Hudson Valley-bred variety from the 19th century once widely planted across the US) and Aestivalis (a little-known North American native grape species) are being cultivated as quality, environmentally sustainable wines.<\/p>\n<p>(As I also learned this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/23\/science\/bananas-sachter-smith.html\"><strong>bananas are in the same boat<\/strong><\/a> as grapes, if not worse. It is the world\u2019s most consumed fruit. Yet a single variety, the Cavendish, accounts for almost\u00a0half\u00a0of all bananas grown globally. There are only about 1,600 known banana varieties; their DNA is stored in a gene bank in Belgium.)<\/p>\n<p>And in labs around the world, the genes of <em>Vitis aestivalis<\/em> and other native grapes are sequenced and cataloged for use in creating new climate-ready grapes and improving the ones the world already knows and loves. As Samuel Peters, a farmer and agricultural researcher at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Nigeria, explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/ambrook.com\/research\/perspective\/an-ode-to-crop-wild-relatives\"><strong>another article<\/strong><\/a> that recently crossed my desk, these \u201ccrop wild relatives\u201d can have \u201cmany high-impact traits that could be studied and adapted to improve domesticated crops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using the example of how grafting <em>Vitis vinifera<\/em> vines onto <em>Vitis riparia<\/em>\u00a0rootstocks saved the French wine industry from phylloxera, Samuel explains that cultivated crops (like <em>vinifera<\/em> grapes) are selected and bred for a narrow set of traits, potentially making them vulnerable to pests, diseases and changing environmental conditions. \u201cCrop wild relatives\u00a0didn\u2019t go down the same evolutionary trajectory\u201d as cultivated crops, he writes. \u201cThey remained in the wild, subject to natural selection.\u201d Thus, these wild things could hold keys to sustaining agriculture, and grape and wine production, into a chaotic future.<\/p>\n<p>As Hurricane Helene\u2014the\u00a0strongest hurricane to make landfall in Florida\u2019s Big Bend region\u2014unleashed record flooding through the Southeast last week and the West Coast copes with the ravages of wildfire, the effects of climate change are upon us.
