Before his passing in 2015, through his significant and selfless contributions of time, energy and funds to organizations that advance the American grape and wine industry, he came to be known as\u00a0a highly effective, collegial and tireless leader.\u00a0Three of those organizations&#8211;the National Grape Research Alliance, <a href=\"http:\/\/wineamerica.org\/\">WineAmerica<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winegrapegrowersofamerica.org\/\">Winegrape Growers of America<\/a>&#8211;together with the Smith Family, collaborated to create the <strong>Rich Smith Distinguished Service Award<\/strong> to honor his spirit and legacy.
